BEML Limited (a Miniratna Category-I PSU under the Ministry of Defence) announced a landmark investment of ₹1,500 crore (with some estimates reaching ₹1,800 crore across the full project lifecycle) to establish a greenfield rail manufacturing hub.
Named BRAHMA (BEML Rail Hub for Advanced Manufacturing), the facility is set to become one of India’s most significant centers for high-speed and urban transit rolling stock.
Project Blueprint: BRAHMA
The facility is a strategic response to India’s massive rail modernization drive under the Viksit Bharat 2047 vision.
- Location: Umariya village, Goharganj tehsil (near Bhopal), Raisen district, Madhya Pradesh.
- Land Area: Spread across approximately 148 acres (60 hectares).
- Phased Expansion: The project will be implemented over five years, with the first phase expected to be operational within two years.
- Financing: Primarily through long-term debt, showcasing BEML’s confidence in its order pipeline.
Production Capacity & Product Mix
BRAHMA is designed to scale BEML’s output to meet the surging domestic and international demand for advanced mobility solutions.
| Feature | Details |
| Annual Capacity | Starting at 125–200 coaches; scaling up to 1,100 coaches per year within 5 years. |
| Key Platforms | Vande Bharat (Sleeper & Chair Car), Amrit Bharat, and high-speed rail coaches. |
| Urban Transit | Driverless metro cars and standard metro rakes for cities like Mumbai, Chennai, and Bhopal. |
| Suburban Rail | Electrical Multiple Units (EMUs) and specialized maintenance vehicles. |
Economic and Regional Impact
The foundation stone for the facility was laid by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on February 8, 2026, highlighting the project’s importance to national infrastructure.
- Job Creation: Expected to generate over 5,000 direct and indirect jobs.
- MSME Ecosystem: The hub will act as a catalyst for local supply chains in Madhya Pradesh’s industrial belt, particularly benefiting clusters in Singrauli, Satna, and Katni.
- Green Manufacturing: The plant will feature Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) systems, solar energy integration, and rainwater harvesting, aligning with India’s 2070 Net Zero targets.
“BRAHMA is not just a factory; it is a pillar in India’s journey toward industrial self-reliance. It will bolster our position as a global supplier of mobility solutions.” — Rajnath Singh, Union Defence Minister.
