VOC Port Unveils ₹41,860 Crore Plan to Become India’s Green Hydrogen and Ammonia Hub.

VOC Port in Tamil Nadu has announced an ambitious ₹41,860 crore investment plan to establish itself as India’s leading hub for green hydrogen and ammonia production. The port aims to play a crucial role in the country’s green energy transition, aligning with national sustainability goals.

Massive Green Hydrogen Investment

The VOC Port Authority has earmarked 501 acres of land for the development of green hydrogen and ammonia production facilities. The port plans to launch a pilot hydrogen production project by January 2025. This initiative is expected to transform the port into a major player in the global green hydrogen market, supporting India’s efforts to reduce carbon emissions and achieve energy independence.

Strategic Infrastructure Upgrades

To enhance its operational efficiency and cargo handling capacity, VOC Port is undertaking significant infrastructure upgrades. Key projects include:

  • Widening the Entrance Channel: This upgrade will allow larger vessels to access the port, improving its cargo handling capabilities.
  • Construction of Berth 10: An ₹80 crore investment is allocated for the construction of a new berth to accommodate increased traffic and facilitate efficient cargo operations.
  • Facility Upgrades for Smaller Oil Tankers: By mid-2025, VOC Port aims to complete upgrades to handle smaller oil tankers, ensuring seamless operations and reduced turnaround times.

Green Energy Initiatives

As part of its green energy drive, the port is launching a pilot bunkering project to showcase its refueling capabilities for hydrogen and its derivatives. This initiative underscores the port’s commitment to sustainable energy solutions and positions it as a pioneer in green shipping practices.

Strategic Advantages

VOC Port’s strategic location near the East-West international shipping route provides it with several advantages, including minimal ship turnaround time and excellent connectivity to major trade routes. The port’s robust infrastructure and all-weather operational capability make it a key gateway for South India, enhancing its significance in regional and global trade.

Regional Economic Driver

With its focus on sustainability, innovation, and advanced technologies, VOC Port is poised to become a critical driver of regional economic development. The port’s green hydrogen and ammonia initiatives will not only boost India’s clean energy production but also create new opportunities for industries, contributing to India’s global trade aspirations and reinforcing its position in the green energy market.

The VOC Port’s comprehensive investment plan reflects its commitment to becoming a leader in sustainable energy and supporting India’s transition towards a greener future.
