Mahindra Opens New EV Manufacturing and Battery Facility in Chakan.

Mahindra has inaugurated a state-of-the-art electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing and battery assembly facility at its Chakan plant in Pune. This new unit marks a significant step in Mahindra’s commitment to sustainable mobility solutions and the production of its Electric Origin SUVs.

Advanced Manufacturing Capabilities

The new facility, located within the company’s expansive 2.83 square kilometer Chakan manufacturing hub, integrates advanced automation technologies. The unit is equipped with over 1,000 robots and automated material handling systems to ensure efficient production processes. Designed with sustainability in mind, the Chakan hub is water-positive and operates entirely on renewable energy.

Mahindra has allocated Rs 4,500 crore from its Rs 16,000 crore investment plan for the fiscal years 2022 to 2027 to support the development of its EV operations. This includes investments in powertrain development, software and technology advancements, and expanded manufacturing capacities.

Focus on Sustainability and Inclusivity

The Chakan facility underscores Mahindra’s dedication to sustainability and inclusivity. The plant aims to achieve a 25% gender diversity ratio and prioritizes skill development for its workforce, preparing employees to meet future industry challenges.

The battery assembly line at the Chakan plant incorporates advanced manufacturing processes to produce high-performance batteries. These batteries undergo rigorous end-of-line testing under simulated real-world conditions to ensure safety, efficiency, and durability.

Contribution to India’s Sustainability Goals

Through this initiative, Mahindra reinforces its commitment to the “Make in India” program while contributing to India’s sustainability targets outlined at COP26. The company’s efforts are aligned with India’s vision of transitioning to electric mobility by 2030.

Mahindra’s EV facility in Chakan reflects its broader vision of fostering innovation and promoting sustainable transportation solutions. By investing in cutting-edge technology and focusing on inclusivity, the company is setting a benchmark for the EV industry in India.
