Nokia announces a massive $4 billion U.S. investment in R&D and manufacturing for AI-ready networks. The move aims to bolster America’s tech infrastructure and security.
DALLAS, Texas – In a major commitment to American technological leadership Nokia has unveiled a plan to invest an additional $4 billion in the United States. The multi-year investment will supercharge research, development, and manufacturing for next-generation, AI-ready network infrastructure.
This strategic move is designed to help the U.S. and its allies build more secure, productive, and prosperous economies by creating the agile and energy-efficient networks that artificial intelligence demands.
Building on a Strong Foundation
This new $4 billion pledge is not a standalone effort. It builds upon Nokia’s recent, massive investment in the U.S. tech sector, including:
- A $2.3 billion investment through its acquisition of Infinera Corporation, which bolstered its semiconductor and AI capabilities.
- Infinera’s own previous announcement of a $456 million investment in two U.S. manufacturing facilities, supported by CHIPS Act incentives.
This layered investment strategy positions Nokia as a key player in rebuilding America’s advanced manufacturing and innovation ecosystem.
Where is the Money Going?
The $4 billion will be strategically allocated to cement the U.S. as a hub for networking innovation:
- $3.5 Billion for R&D: The bulk of the investment will fuel research and development. This work will advance next-generation technologies across mobile, fixed access, IP, and optical networks. It will also focus on mission-critical defense solutions and data center networking. This effort will be led by the legendary Nokia Bell Labs in New Jersey, continuing a century-long legacy of innovation that brought the world the transistor.
- $500 Million in Capital Expenditures: This portion will be directed toward upgrading and expanding manufacturing and R&D facilities in several states, including Texas, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.
The Goal: Smarter, Safer, and More Efficient Networks
The ultimate objective of this investment is to create “AI-ready” networks. This means building the underlying connectivity that can handle the immense data and speed requirements of widespread AI applications. Key focus areas include:
- Network Automation: Using AI to make networks self-configuring and self-repairing.
- Quantum-Safe Security: Developing encryption that can withstand future quantum computer attacks.
- Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing: Strengthening the domestic supply chain for critical chips.
- Energy Efficiency: Creating networking solutions that do more with less power.
By investing heavily in these areas, Nokia aims to provide the technological backbone that will power America’s competitiveness in the global AI race, ensuring that the networks of tomorrow are built, and secured, at home.
