Wistron to invest $20 million for new factory line in Karnataka.

Wistron one of the main suppliers of Apply is setting up a new factory line in Karnataka. In which they will committed to invest an initial $20 million in advance Laptop manufacturing unit .

Wistron New Factory Line: For Laptop Manufacturing

Wistron has allocated $20 million to ICT Service Management Solutions (India) a subsidiary managed through SMS Infocom (Singapore). This investment lays the groundwork for after-sales service and logistics operations aligned with the upcoming Laptop Manufacturing Unit.

Key features of the new factory line include:

  • Warranty Repair Services: Specializing in Printed Circuit Board (PCB) repairs for notebooks and PCs.
  • Inventory Management: Streamlining parts procurement and inventory solutions.
  • Logistics Solutions: Increasing efficiency for laptop production.

The after-sales service line will complement Wistron’s manufacturing efforts and providing end-to-end support for its laptop operations.

Land Acquisition and Infrastructure.

Wistron recently acquired 32 acres of industrial land at the Hi-Tech Defence and Aerospace Park in Devanahalli, Karnataka in ₹160 crore. The new production facility will be located near the laptop manufacturing unit promoting synergies between manufacturing and service operations.

Investment and Export Commitments.

In January 2024 Wistron signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of Karnataka and committing ₹1,500 crore to set up a state-of-the-art laptop manufacturing plant. The key features of the project are as follows:

  • Targeted export output: More than 50% of the laptops produced will be exported.
  • Timeline: Manufacturing began in mid-2024 with production scheduled to begin by January 2026.

Wistron’s evolving strategy in India

Wistron has exited the iPhone assembly business since the Tata Group acquired Wistron Infocomm Manufacturing (India) in October 2023. But the company continues to operate in India through its subsidiaries:

  • ICT Service Management Solutions: Focused on service import-export and parts procurement.
  • Smartiply India: Develops IoT platforms and internet-related solutions.
  • Wistron Automotive Electronics: Specialises in automotive electronics manufacturing and R&D.
