At the Vibrant Gujarat Regional Conference (VGRC) on January 11, 2026 B.K. Goenka Chairman of the Welspun Group announced a massive ₹5,000 crore investment aimed at making the company the world’s largest pipe manufacturer by the end of this year.
This investment is the centerpiece of Welspun’s strategy to pivot from a textile-dominant firm to an infrastructure powerhouse, leveraging Kutch as its global supply base.
Strategic Breakdown: The ₹5,000 Crore Roadmap
The investment is being funneled into three high-growth divisions within Welspun Corp Limited (WCL) to address global energy and water infrastructure needs.
1. Dominance in Line Pipes (Oil & Gas)
Welspun is already one of the top two manufacturers of large-diameter pipes globally. The new capital will:
- Upgrade Anjar (Gujarat): Upgrading existing spiral mills to hybrid LSAW (Longitudinal Submerged Arc Welded) setups to serve high-pressure gas pipelines.
- Global Footprint: Complementing recent expansions in Little Rock, USA ($150M investment) and Saudi Arabia (new LSAW plant in Dammam) to bypass trade barriers and serve local markets directly.
2. Expansion in Ductile Iron (DI) Pipes (Water)
Following the recent inauguration of a new unit in Anjar by Union Minister C.R. Patil in December 2025:
- Capacity Surge: Total DI pipe capacity has reached 600,000 MTPA (up from 400,000 MTPA).
- Target: To support India’s Jal Jeevan Mission and global water transmission projects.
3. Backward Integration & New Materials
- Specialty Steel: Expanding the capabilities of Welspun Specialty Solutions to produce stainless steel pipes and tubes for the defense, nuclear, and aerospace sectors.
- Green Energy Ready: Engineering new pipelines capable of transporting Hydrogen and supporting Carbon Capture (CCUS) technologies.
Welspun’s “Mini Japan” Vision
Goenka highlighted that the Morbi-Jamnagar-Rajkot belt, often called “Mini Japan,” is where Welspun has built its most integrated ecosystem.
| Metric | Current Status | Post-Investment Goal (End of 2026) |
| Global Ranking | Top 2 in Line Pipes | No. 1 Largest Pipe Manufacturer Globally |
| DI Pipe Capacity | 400 KMTPA | 600 KMTPA |
| Market Presence | 50+ Countries | Expanded footprint in US, KSA, and EU |
| Home Textile Share | 25% (US/UK) | Integration of textiles with advanced manufacturing |
“Kutch was once known for water scarcity and calamities… Today, it is a moment of national pride as we position ourselves to lead the world in pipe manufacturing.” — B.K. Goenka
