KOLKATA / TAMIL NADU – In a major boost to India’s domestic solar manufacturing capabilities Vikram Solar has officially activated its massive new 5 GW solar module factory in Vallam, Tamil Nadu. But the company isn’t stopping there; it has unveiled an ambitious ₹6,200 crore plan to supercharge its presence in the state even further.
This latest move solidifies Tamil Nadu’s position as a cornerstone of India’s renewable energy infrastructure.
The Gangaikondan Gambit: A Mega-Expansion on the Horizon
Fresh off the Vallam commissioning, Vikram Solar has its sights set on its next big project in the state: a sprawling facility in Gangaikondan.
Here’s the breakdown of the planned expansion:
- Module Manufacturing: A new 6 GW module manufacturing capacity is slated to begin operations by the last quarter of this financial year (Q4 FY26).
- Cell Manufacturing: In a significant step towards self-reliance, the company will also establish a 12 GW solar cell manufacturing plant at the same site. This will be rolled out in phases, with 3 GW coming online in Q3 FY27 and the remaining 9 GW in Q4 FY27.
This integrated approach—making both cells and modules under one roof—is a strategic leap that strengthens the entire domestic solar supply chain.
Vallam: Not Just Big, But Smart
The newly opened Vallam plant is being hailed as more than just a capacity addition; it’s a “future-ready” technological marvel. The facility is designed with a high level of next-generation automation, featuring intelligent robotics and advanced quality checks that set a new benchmark for precision and efficiency in Indian solar manufacturing.
Built on advanced TOPCon technology, the plant is engineered to be easily upgraded to even newer technologies like HJT, ensuring it remains at the cutting edge for years to come.
Tamil Nadu: The Heart of India’s Solar Ambitions
With the Vallam plant now live Vikram Solar operates three key manufacturing facilities: Falta in West Bengal (3.2 GW) and Oragadam (1.3 GW) and Vallam (5 GW) in Tamil Nadu. This strategic concentration of capacity underscores the company’s long-term commitment to anchoring India’s solar manufacturing story in Tamil Nadu.
“Vallam is a defining milestone,” said Gyanesh Chaudhary, Chairman & Managing Director of Vikram Solar. “Commissioning this 5 GW facility within the year was a bold commitment, and delivering on it signals our readiness for the scale, speed, and innovation the next decade demands.”
The modules produced at these state-of-the-art plants will power projects across India, supplying everything from massive utility-scale solar farms to commercial and industrial setups, directly supporting the nation’s race towards its ambitious renewable energy targets.
