TSPL Launches Punjab’s Largest Biomass Facility to Combat Stubble Burning.

Vedanta’s Talwandi Sabo Power Limited (TSPL) inaugurates Punjab’s largest biomass plant, converting crop stubble into carbon-neutral bio-pellets to cut coal use & reduce air pollution

Mansa, Punjab – Talwandi Sabo Power Limited (TSPL), North India’s largest private thermal power producer, has commissioned Punjab’s largest biomass manufacturing facility near its 1,980 MW thermal power plant in Mansa.

Key Highlights of the Facility:

✔ 500 tons/day capacity – Converts agricultural stubble into torrefied bio-pellets
✔ Reduces 5% daily coal use – Replaced with carbon-neutral fuel
✔ Cuts 2.6 million tons of CO₂ emissions annually
✔ Procures 8 lakh tons of paddy stubble from farmers (prevents burning)
✔ Supports Punjab’s clean air goals & Vedanta’s Net Zero 2050 vision

How It Works?

  1. Farmers supply crop residue instead of burning it.
  2. Stubble is processed into high-energy torrefied bio-pellets.
  3. Pellets co-fired with coal in TSPL’s thermal plant, reducing emissions.

Environmental & Economic Impact

✅ Reduces stubble burning – Punjab generates 15-20 million tons/year of crop waste.
✅ Improves air quality – Cuts seasonal smog in North India.
✅ Boosts farmer income – Provides an alternative to burning.
✅ Lowers coal dependency – Advances India’s clean energy transition.

Leadership Insights

Dr. Adarsh Pal Vig, Chairman, Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB):

“TSPL’s biomass initiative sets a benchmark for industrial environmental stewardship. By converting stubble into fuel, they’re tackling pollution while supporting farmers.”

Mr. Pankaj Sharma, COO, TSPL:

“This facility aligns with Vedanta’s sustainability goals. We’re not just reducing emissions but creating a circular economy for agro-waste.”

Future Expansion

  • Scale up bio-pellet production
  • Increase farmer participation in stubble collection
  • Explore more coal substitution in power generation

Conclusion

TSPL’s biomass plant is a game-changer for Punjab, addressing stubble burning, air pollution, and clean energy in one move. This initiative reinforces Vedanta’s commitment to sustainable industrial growth.
