In a significant leap for India’s clean energy ambitions Agratas the battery arm of the Tata Group has announced major progress at its flagship 20 GWh battery manufacturing facility in Sanand, Gujarat. The plant’s structural steel framework is nearing completion marking a pivotal step toward operational readiness.

The massive 320-acre project is a cornerstone of India’s strategy to build a domestic supply chain for electric vehicles (EVs) and energy storage systems. Currently, over 2,700 personnel, including 2,000+ construction workers and 700+ vendor staff, are deployed on-site, highlighting the project’s scale and pace.

Building a Sustainable and Advanced Hub

Supported by Tata Projects and Tata Consulting Engineers, the facility is being constructed with a focus on sustainable infrastructure. Agratas is simultaneously developing an integrated supply chain system for real-time logistics management, aiming to meet global benchmarks for efficiency and quality.

Strategic Importance for India’s Energy Transition

Once operational, the plant will be one of India’s largest and most advanced battery production hubs. Its 20 GWh annual capacity in the first phase will directly support Tata’s expanding EV portfolio and contribute to the nation’s grid-scale energy storage needs.

Anand Sodha, Vice President of Supply Chain at Agratas, emphasized that the facility is “poised to become one of India’s most advanced battery manufacturing plants.” This project underscores the Tata Group’s strategic commitment to leading India’s pivot to electrification and reducing dependence on imported battery cells.
