Tata Electronics & Qualcomm Partner to Power India’s Semiconductor Future.

Qualcomm Technologies and Tata Electronics announced a major strategic partnership to manufacture Qualcomm Automotive Modules in India. This collaboration marks a significant leap for India’s semiconductor ecosystem, moving beyond simple assembly to high-tech automotive systems.

The production will take place at Tata Electronics’ upcoming US$3 billion semiconductor facility in Jagiroad, Assam.

The Project: Qualcomm Automotive Modules

Unlike individual chips, these modules are “production-ready” systems that integrate multiple complex components into a single unit. Think of them as the “brain and central nervous system” of a modern vehicle.

The Manufacturing Hub: Jagiroad, Assam

Tata Electronics is building India’s first indigenous high-volume Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) facility.

Strategic Rationale: Why This Matters

This partnership solves two major industry challenges: complexity and supply chain resilience.

  1. For Automakers: By providing a “turnkey” module, Qualcomm helps car manufacturers (OEMs) reduce design complexity and significantly shorten the time it takes to bring a new car model to market.
  2. For Global Supply Chains: As the world moves away from over-reliance on a few manufacturing hubs, the Assam facility provides a critical geographic alternative for global automakers.
  3. For India: It positions Tata Electronics as a global Tier-1 manufacturing partner, capable of serving top-tier automotive clients like BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Toyota, who already utilize Qualcomm’s Digital Chassis.

“Our work with Tata Electronics marks an important milestone… expanding manufacturing capacity in key regions becomes essential as the industry shifts toward integrated, module-based architectures.” — Nakul Duggal, EVP & Group GM, Automotive, Qualcomm.
