Tata Advanced Systems Makes History with First Indian-Owned Overseas Defence Plant in Morocco.

Tata Advanced Systems makes history, opening India’s first overseas defence plant in Morocco to produce the WhAP 8×8 armoured vehicle. A milestone for India’s defence exports

In a landmark moment for India’s defence industry Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) has inaugurated its first overseas defence manufacturing facility in Berrechid, Morocco. This venture is not just a first for the Tata Group but also represents the first-ever overseas manufacturing facility established by an Indian defence company signalling a new era of global ambition.

The new plant was officially unveiled on Tuesday in the Casablanca-Settat region. Its primary focus will be the production and delivery of the indigenously designed Wheeled Armoured Platform (WhAP 8×8), a modern, modular armoured vehicle developed jointly by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Tata Motors.

A New Chapter in India-Morocco Relations

The facility is a key part of a contract with the Government of Morocco and is poised to become a cornerstone of strategic industrial partnership between the two nations. Initial deliveries of the armoured vehicles are scheduled to begin in October of this year.

Sukaran Singh, Chief Executive Officer & Managing Director of Tata Advanced Systems, highlighted the significance of the event: “Today’s Defence factory inauguration near Casablanca in Morocco marks a new chapter in the India–Morocco industrial partnership, and Tata Advanced Systems is proud to be part of this milestone.”

Strategic Importance and Global Reach

The inauguration was graced by India’s Defence Minister, Shri Rajnath Singh, who underscored the plant’s role as a bridge connecting the region to the global market. He stated, “India, with its growing technological and industrial base, has emerged today as a rising hub of innovation and a reliable partner of the Global South. Therefore, this plant will be beneficial for both countries.”

This move is a powerful testament to the success of India’s ‘Make in India’ initiative, demonstrating that the country is now not only self-reliant in defence production but also capable of exporting its advanced manufacturing capabilities.
