INCHEON, South Korea – A significant step towards a more connected and sustainable digital future in Asia has begun. The ESR Group through its data centre platform BPIDC alongside its partner Wide Creek Asset Management has officially broken ground on “KR1,” its first data centre development in South Korea.

This isn’t just another construction project. KR1 is a massive nine-storey hyperscale facility located in the strategic Bupyeong District of Incheon. With a planned capacity of 80 MW it’s built to power the region’s exploding demand for cloud computing, AI and digital services.

More Than Just Power: A Commitment to Sustainability.

What truly sets KR1 apart is its strong environmental commitment from the start. The project is actively targeting a LEED Gold certification, a globally recognized symbol of sustainability achievement. To reach this goal, the data centre will incorporate innovative green technologies:

  • Building-Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV): Instead of just solar panels on the roof, the building itself will generate clean electricity. Think of solar cells seamlessly built into the walls or windows, turning the entire structure into a power generator.
  • Fuel Cell Technology: This advanced technology provides highly reliable and cleaner power, enhancing the facility’s energy efficiency and reducing its carbon footprint.

Fuelling Asia’s Digital Boom

This new development is a key piece of ESR’s expanding data centre network across the Asia-Pacific (APAC). As businesses and consumers in South Korea and the wider region rely more on data-heavy applications, the need for scalable high-performance and resilient digital infrastructure becomes critical.

KR1 is strategically positioned to be a cornerstone of this digital ecosystem providing the essential backbone that supports everything from streaming services and online banking to the next generation of artificial intelligence.

By combining massive computing power with a forward-thinking green blueprint, the KR1 data centre is not just preparing South Korea for the digital demands of today, but is building a more sustainable foundation for tomorrow.
