On Friday, February 27, 2026, Soprema India Private Limited a subsidiary of the French waterproofing and insulation giant Soprema Group, announced the inauguration of its state-of-the-art manufacturing facility and headquarters in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.
The greenfield plant is a key part of the group’s Asia-Pacific strategy aiming to transform India into a regional export hub for high-performance geosynthetic solutions.
Facility Blueprint: The Ahmedabad Greenfield Plant
The facility is engineered to produce advanced materials for civil engineering and infrastructure projects, focusing on speed and sustainability.
- Scale: Spans over 11,000 square metres, with the initial phase covering 1,750 square metres.
- Production Capacity: Engineered for an annual output of six million square metres of material.
- Core Technologies:
- GCCM (Geosynthetic Cementitious Composite Mats): Used for ditch lining and slope protection; it provides a “concrete on a roll” solution.
- GCL (Geosynthetic Clay Liners): Featuring bentonite clay for hydraulic barriers in canals and landfills.
- Unique Capability: The automated line produces rolls up to 5.9 metres wide, significantly reducing the number of seams (and potential leak points) in large-scale installations.
Strategic Rationale: Proximity and Export
Soprema chose Ahmedabad specifically for its industrial ecosystem and logistical advantages:
- Export Gateway: Proximity to Mundra and Nhava Sheva ports allows Soprema India to efficiently supply markets in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.
- Make in India: Local production is expected to slash logistics costs and lead times for major Indian projects, such as tunnel waterproofing and urban drainage systems.
- Product Synergy: These geocomposites complement Soprema’s existing PVC Primatess geomembranes, offering a complete waterproofing “envelope” for civil structures.
Soprema Group: Global Context (2026)
The inauguration comes as the parent group continues its aggressive global expansion:
- Financial Strength: The Soprema Group recently reported a consolidated turnover of approximately €4.82 billion (with some estimates for 2025/26 exceeding €5 billion).
- Global Footprint: Operates over 100 factories and 20+ R&D centres worldwide.
- Indian Growth: After maintaining a presence in Gurgaon since 2017, the shift to a manufacturing-led model in Gujarat marks Soprema’s transition from a trader to a primary producer in the Indian market.
“This facility opens new avenues for growth… enhancing our ability to provide high-performance solutions for infrastructure while supporting local manufacturing in India.” — Arkadiusz Gruszyński, Commercial Director, SEBAN by SOPREMA.
