On Wednesday, March 18, 2026, New Delhi-based defense avionics leader Samtel announced a strategic pivot into Space Technologies and Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS), backed by a dedicated diversification budget of over ₹200 crore.
Known for its mission-critical displays in India’s flagship aircraft like the Sukhoi-30 MKI, Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH), and Light Combat Helicopter (LCH), Samtel is now leveraging its aerospace heritage to capture the rapidly growing “NewSpace” and autonomous drone markets.
The Drone & Anti-Drone Ecosystem
Samtel has established a dedicated Drone Division to move beyond being a component supplier to a full-scale platform developer.
- Proprietary IP: The focus is on building indigenous, long-endurance drones with 100% proprietary intellectual property to ensure strategic autonomy.
- MRO Capabilities: A key part of the ₹200 crore budget is earmarked for setting up Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) hubs for unmanned systems, positioning Samtel as a lifecycle partner for the Indian Armed Forces.
- Counter-UAS: The company is also developing advanced Anti-Drone Systems integrated with AI-driven detection and “soft-kill” (jamming) capabilities.
The Space Frontier: LEO & Debris Clearing
Samtel is entering the space sector at a time of massive commercialization in India. The company’s first space project is slated to commence by June 2026.
- Miniature Satellites: Focus on the development of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) and miniature satellites for secure communication and Earth observation.
- Space Sustainability: In a niche move, Samtel is researching Space Debris Clearing Mechanisms, addressing the growing global concern over orbital congestion.
- Collaboration: The company is expected to collaborate with IN-SPACe and ISRO to qualify its space-grade electronics for upcoming orbital missions.
Financial Targets & Market Outlook
With the Indian defense and space sectors opening up to private players, Samtel has set aggressive growth targets:
- Order Book Goal: Targeting a ₹1,000-crore order book by the end of FY27, driven by both domestic “Make in India” contracts and export opportunities.
- Revenue Synergy: By diversifying, Samtel aims to reduce its reliance on traditional manned-aircraft cycles and tap into the high-frequency procurement cycles of the drone industry.
