Reliance Consumer Products to invest ₹1,156 crore in a new Tamil Nadu FMCG plant in Thoothukudi. The 60-acre facility will create 2000 jobs, producing snacks, biscuits, spices & more.c

In a significant boost to Tamil Nadu’s industrial landscape Reliance Consumer Products Limited (RCPL) the FMCG arm of Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Industries, will set up a major integrated manufacturing facility in the state. The project, involving an investment of ₹1,156 crore, was announced by Tamil Nadu’s Industries Minister, T.R.B. Rajaa.

The new plant will be established at the SIPCOT Allikulam Industrial Park in Thoothukudi, signaling a strategic expansion of RCPL’s manufacturing footprint in South India.

A Multi-Product Powerhouse

The facility is designed to be a comprehensive manufacturing hub for a wide range of fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG). Spanning 60 acres, the plant will focus on multi-product manufacturing, including:

  • Regional snacks and biscuits
  • Spices
  • Atta (flour)
  • Edible oil

This diverse product portfolio aligns with RCPL’s strategy to rapidly expand its presence in the competitive branded foods market under its own labels like ‘Independence’ and other acquired brands.

Job Creation and Industrial Growth

The project is expected to have a substantial socio-economic impact on the Thoothukudi region. Over the next five years, the facility is projected to generate employment for 2,000 local individuals, providing a significant boost to the local economy.

Minister Rajaa highlighted the state’s successful industrial push, stating, “We continue to attract marquee national FMCG players into the State, and there is no major sector we are leaving untapped.” This investment reinforces Tamil Nadu’s position as a top destination for diversified industrial investments, building on its reputation as a manufacturing powerhouse.

Strategic Implications for Reliance

For Reliance, this move represents a critical step in strengthening its backward integration and supply chain within the FMCG sector. By establishing a large, integrated facility, RCPL can achieve greater control over production costs, ensure consistent quality, and improve distribution efficiency across South India and beyond.

The choice of Thoothukudi is also strategic, leveraging the port city’s excellent connectivity for both sourcing raw materials and distributing finished goods. This investment underscores Reliance’s serious commitment to building a formidable and vertically integrated FMCG business to compete with established national players.

The plant will play a key role in scaling up RCPL’s production capabilities to meet the growing demand for its diverse and affordable product portfolio, further accelerating its journey to become a leading household name in the Indian FMCG sector.
