In a significant move toward self-reliance in strategic materials Aerolloy Technologies a wholly-owned subsidiary of PTC Industries has completed the installation of its first Plasma Arc Melting (PAM) furnace in Lucknow as of January 8, 2026.
Located at the company’s Strategic Manufacturing Technology Centre (SMTC) within the Uttar Pradesh Defence Industrial Corridor, this installation makes PTC Industries one of the most integrated titanium and superalloy manufacturing platforms in the region.
Technical Capabilities of the PAM Furnace
The PAM furnace represents a leap in metallurgical precision, specifically designed to handle the complex requirements of Titanium alloys.
- Capacity: Approximately 600 tonnes per annum.
- Primary Output: Aerospace-grade Titanium alloy ingots.
- Technology Advantage: Unlike traditional vacuum melting, PAM operates under an inert gas atmosphere (typically Argon or Helium). This suppresses the evaporation of volatile alloying elements like Aluminum and Chromium, ensuring much more accurate alloy chemistry.
- Cleanliness: The high-temperature plasma torch (reaching over 15,000 K) ensures superior metallurgical cleanliness by effectively removing high-density inclusions (HDIs).
Strategic & Economic Impact
This facility is a cornerstone of PTC Industries’ strategy to build a vertically integrated ecosystem for advanced materials in India.
| Benefit | Impact |
| Material Yield | Allows for rapid remelting and recycling of internally generated scrap, reducing production costs. |
| Import Substitution | Reduces India’s heavy reliance on imported Titanium ingots for defence and space missions. |
| Customization | Enables the production of smaller, specialized batches of alloys that are not economically viable in larger furnaces. |
| Synergy | Complements existing Vacuum Arc Remelting (VAR) and Vacuum Induction Melting (VIM) units already at the Lucknow facility. |
The “Integrated Ecosystem” Vision
The installation follows a series of milestones for PTC Industries in Lucknow, including:
- Vacuum Arc Remelting (VAR): Commissioned in early 2025 with a 1,500 MT capacity.
- ISRO Partnership: PTC recently secured orders to supply 40 tonnes of Titanium alloy ingots for space applications.
- Single Crystal Technology: The facility is also one of the few in the world capable of producing Single Crystal and Directionally Solidified castings for aero-engine blades.
“The PAM facility allows us to manufacture customised Titanium alloys in limited quantities, supporting advanced aerospace and space programmes that require tailored specifications.” — Aerolloy Management
