Gujarat Facility to Produce eVitara SUV for Domestic Market and 100+ Global Destinations
Gandhinagar, Gujarat – In a landmark event for India’s automotive industry, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate Maruti Suzuki’s new dedicated electric vehicle (EV) and lithium-ion battery manufacturing plant in Gujarat tomorrow. This state-of-the-art facility will be the production hub for the company’s first globally-focused electric SUV, the Maruti Suzuki eVitara, cementing India’s role as a key exporter of electric vehicles.
The inauguration signifies a strategic pivot for India’s largest carmaker, which has “long prepared” for its electric foray. The eVitara which made its debut at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025 will be manufactured in India for both domestic customers and for export to over 100 countries worldwide.
A Self-Reliant Electric Ecosystem: Cars and Batteries
The new plant is a critical component of India’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India) mission. For the first time Maruti Suzuki will not only assemble electric cars but also manufacture the core lithium-ion battery packs domestically. This vertical integration:
- Reduces Import Dependency: Cuts down on costly battery imports, a major hurdle for EV affordability in India.
- Controls Costs: Local production of the most expensive component in an EV is key to competitive pricing.
- Supports Hybrids: The battery facility will also supply packs for the company’s strong hybrid vehicles, strengthening its entire electrified portfolio.
Maruti Suzuki eVitara: Specifications and Features
The eVitara is poised to be a fully-featured, competitive offering in the burgeoning electric SUV segment:
- Battery & Range: It will be offered globally with two battery options:
- 49 kWh: Expected WLTP range of 346 km
- 61 kWh: Expected WLTP range of 428 km (Single Motor) / 412 km (Dual Motor)
- Premium Interiors: The cabin boasts a dual-tone brown-and-black theme, a new two-spoke steering wheel, a 10.1-inch infotainment screen, and a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster.
- Top-Tier Features: The SUV is loaded with amenities including ventilated front seats, a fixed glass roof, Level-2 ADAS, a 360-degree camera, 7 airbags, and reclining/sliding rear seats.
Price, Rivals, and Market Impact
The Maruti Suzuki eVitara is expected to be launched at a starting price of around ₹20 lakh (ex-showroom), positioning it as a premium mass-market offering. Upon its launch, it will enter a highly competitive segment, rivalling the Mahindra BE.05, Hyundai Creta Electric, MG ZS EV, and the upcoming Tata Curvv EV.
A Milestone for “Make in India”
This plant is more than a manufacturing unit; it is a powerful symbol of India’s evolving industrial capabilities. By choosing India as a global export hub for a modern electric vehicle, Suzuki and Maruti are demonstrating immense confidence in Indian engineering, quality, and the supportive policy environment fostered by the government.
The facility is expected to generate significant employment, boost the local supplier ecosystem, and firmly place Gujarat on the global map as a hub for electric vehicle manufacturing.
