Montra Electric HCV opens a new EV truck plant in Manesar with 6,000-unit capacity. Features India’s 1st all-women automated battery line & 74% localisation.
MANESAR, HARYANA: In a significant step for India’s electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem Montra Electric HCV (IPL Tech), the clean mobility arm of the century-old Murugappa Group, has inaugurated a new state-of-the-art manufacturing facility for electric heavy commercial vehicles (e-HCVs) in Manesar, Haryana. The plant is poised to be a cornerstone for sustainable freight solutions in the country.
Scale and Scalability for India’s EV Demand
The sprawling facility, built on 255,000 square feet of land, has been designed for significant output and future growth. With an initial annual production capacity of 6,000 electric trucks on a two-shift basis, the plant can be scaled up to produce 7,500 units by adding more shifts. This scalability ensures Montra Electric can meet the rising demand for electric trucks in the Indian logistics sector.
A Pioneer in Gender Inclusivity and Automation
A landmark feature of the plant is the establishment of India’s first all-women fully automated battery production unit. This initiative not only highlights the company’s commitment to cutting-edge, Industry 4.0 digital manufacturing practices but also sets a new benchmark for gender inclusivity in the automotive and engineering sectors.
The facility boasts a high level of automation, with 60% robotics integration, ensuring precision, efficiency, and consistent quality in the manufacturing process.
In-House Capabilities and Strong Localisation
The plant is a fully integrated unit with comprehensive in-house capabilities. It includes a battery pack assembly capacity of 1.7 GWh and extensive testing infrastructure, including electrical labs quality assurance labs and specialized testing systems for vehicle components.
Aligning with the national ‘Make in India’ vision, Montra Electric has committed to a strong localization strategy, planning to source 74% of components locally (excluding imported battery cells). The facility will produce multiple variants including the company’s Rhino EV series and future vehicle models.
Commitment to Sustainability and Community
The company has embedded sustainability into the plant’s operations, incorporating measures like battery recycling programs, waste management systems, and plans to integrate renewable energy sources in future expansion phases. Beyond manufacturing, Montra Electric has announced community engagement initiatives, including skill development programs and environmental projects for the local area.
P.V. Satyanarayana, Chief Business Officer at Montra Electric HCV, described the facility as “a defining step in India’s transition to sustainable logistics,” emphasizing its blend of scale, flexibility, and quality.
Strategic Support and Future Outlook
The company intends to apply for benefits under the government’s PM E-Drive Scheme and explore state-level incentives to support its expansion. Backed by the 125-year-old, ₹902 billion Murugappa Group, Montra Electric is well-positioned to be a key player in India’s evolving electric commercial vehicle market.
The launch of the Manesar facility marks a crucial advancement in India’s quest to decarbonize its freight and logistics sector, providing a viable, homegrown solution for clean and efficient transportation.
