Mitsubishi Electric India reached a major milestone in its “Advanced & Innovation 2025” strategy by inaugurating its first-ever air conditioner and compressor manufacturing facility in India.

Located at Gummidipoondi, near Chennai, the plant was virtually launched by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin. This ₹2,100 crore project transforms Mitsubishi from an importer to a key domestic manufacturer in the Indian HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) market.

Plant Specifications & Strategic Scale

The facility is situated on a 52-acre (210,000 sq. m.) site within the Origins by Mahindra industrial cluster, a strategic location providing high-speed connectivity to the Chennai, Ennore, and Kattupalli ports.

  • Annual Capacity: 3,00,000 room air conditioner units and 6,50,000 compressor units.
  • Unique Feature: It is the only Mitsubishi facility globally where both ACs and compressors are manufactured at a single location, optimizing the supply chain and quality control.
  • Employment: Creating over 2,100 direct and indirect jobs, with a commitment to employing roughly 60% women in the workforce.

Sustainability & Future Readiness

Aligned with global ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) goals, the factory is designed as an eco-friendly hub:

  • Carbon Neutrality: Implements upgraded thermal insulation, highly efficient LED lighting, and energy-saving HVAC systems.
  • Water Management: Features advanced underground filtration for wastewater reuse and site greening.
  • Market Pivot: The plant is timed to meet the new Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) norms (effective January 2026), which mandate higher efficiency for inverter-based cooling systems.

Tamil Nadu: The Electronics Powerhouse

The inauguration reinforces Tamil Nadu’s status as a global manufacturing destination. Minister for Industries T.R.B. Rajaa highlighted the state’s dominant industrial position:

  • Industrial Base: Houses approximately 40,000 factories.
  • Growth Rate: Registering a double-digit growth of 11.19%.
  • Export Lead: Accounts for 41% of India’s electronic exports and 31% of total electronics production.

“India is witnessing rapid growth for energy-efficient solutions. This facility positions India as a core hub within our global air conditioning business, enabling us to respond faster to local needs while maintaining world-class quality.” — Atsushi Takase, Managing Director, Mitsubishi Electric India.
