Lenovo to Manufacture 100% of Its PCs in India Within Three Years Expands AI and R&D Capabilities.

In a major boost to India’s manufacturing and technology landscape, global tech giant Lenovo announced on Wednesday that it will manufacture 100% of its personal computer (PC) models in India over the next three years. This includes its cutting-edge AI-powered PCs marking a significant step in the company’s commitment to the Indian market. The announcement was made as Lenovo celebrated 20 years of its presence in India at its flagship event Lenovo TechWorld India 2025 held in Mumbai.

From 30% to 100%: Lenovo’s Local Manufacturing Push

Shailendra Katyal, Managing Director of Lenovo India, revealed that the company currently manufactures 30% of its PCs sold in India locally. This figure is set to rise to 50% by next year and eventually reach 100% within three years. This move aligns with the Indian government’s Make in India initiative and underscores Lenovo’s confidence in India’s manufacturing capabilities.

Katyal also announced that Lenovo’s AI-powered servers will begin rolling out from its India manufacturing hub starting April 1. This development highlights Lenovo’s focus on integrating artificial intelligence into its product offerings, catering to the growing demand for advanced computing solutions in India and globally.

Strengthening India’s AI Ecosystem

Lenovo is not just expanding its manufacturing base in India but is also investing heavily in AI talent and research and development (R&D). The company announced the establishment of a new R&D center in Bengaluru, which will focus on developing next-generation AI GPU-based servers. This center will play a crucial role in hardware, software, firmware, testing, and validation, ensuring that Lenovo remains at the forefront of AI innovation.

Mathew Zielinski, President of International Markets at Lenovo, emphasized India’s importance as a global market, stating, “India is one of the most important markets in the world. Our manufacturing footprint in India is not only building for India but is also establishing India as a huge exporter.”

India as a Global Export Hub

Lenovo’s manufacturing facilities in India, including its plant in Puducherry, are already making significant contributions to the global supply chain. The Puducherry facility, launched in September 2023, produces 50,000 enterprise AI servers and 2,400 high-end GPU units annually. In 2024 alone, Lenovo manufactured and exported products worth ₹18,000 crore from India, showcasing the country’s potential as a global export hub.

Motorola’s Triple-Digit Growth in India

Lenovo’s smartphone brand, Motorola, has also seen remarkable growth in India. Zielinski revealed that Motorola has achieved an 8% market share in India, with growth rates ranging between 100-160%. The company manufactures 100% of its Motorola smartphones in India and exports them to other markets, further solidifying India’s role in Lenovo’s global strategy.

A Vision for the Future

With 14,000 employees in India, including 400 at its new Bengaluru R&D center, Lenovo is deeply invested in the country’s technological advancement. The company’s focus on AI, coupled with its expanding manufacturing and R&D capabilities, positions India as a key player in Lenovo’s global operations.

Lenovo’s commitment to India reflects its confidence in the country’s potential to drive innovation and growth in the tech industry. By leveraging India’s talent pool and manufacturing capabilities, Lenovo aims to deliver cutting-edge products that meet the evolving needs of consumers and businesses worldwide
