In a significant move that signals a new chapter for India’s electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini inaugurated the country’s first “all-in-one” Tesla India Motors centre in Gurugram on Thursday.
While this new centre is a sales and service hub, the inauguration ceremony became a platform for a bigger ambition. The Chief Minister expressed strong optimism that Tesla would choose Haryana as the location for its first electric vehicle manufacturing plant in India.
More Than a Market, A Manufacturing Powerhouse
“Haryana is not just a market but a manufacturing powerhouse,” stated CM Saini, making a direct pitch to the iconic EV maker. He positioned Haryana as the ideal state for such a high-profile investment, highlighting its industry-friendly policies and robust automobile sector, which already manufactures the highest number of passenger cars in India.
The state, he said, has become a “land of hope and opportunity,” contributing 3.6% to the national GDP.
Building an Ecosystem for Business
The Chief Minister detailed the state’s efforts to attract and nurture industry. Key initiatives include:
- A new special leasing policy for industrial plots to reduce business costs.
- Strengthening the local supply chain in collaboration with established industries.
- A relentless focus on ease of doing business, which has earned Haryana a top ‘Achievers’ category ranking nationally.
- Streamlining regulations by amending outdated laws to free businesses from red tape.
The Proof is in the Numbers
CM Saini backed his claims with impressive economic data:
- Exports have skyrocketed from approximately ₹70,000 crore before 2014 to over ₹2.75 lakh crore today.
- Over 12.2 lakh Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) have been established in the last 11 years, generating employment for nearly 50 lakh people.
- Haryana has emerged as a startup hub with over 9,100 recognised startups, ranking as the 7th largest state in India for startup activity.
The inauguration of the Tesla brand centre is more than just the opening of a new showroom; it is a strategic milestone. It marks Haryana’s serious intent to become the nucleus of India’s electric mobility revolution, setting the stage for what could be a transformative manufacturing investment in the near future.
