JBIC Governor’s visit to Dholera SIR boosts India’s semiconductor mission. Discover how this global endorsement and the giant Tata-PSMC chip fab plant position Dholera as India’s next industrial hub.
DHOLERA, Gujarat – In a significant boost to India’s semiconductor ambitions, a high-level Japanese delegation led by Mr. Nobumitsu Hayashi, Governor of the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC), visited the Dholera Special Investment Region (SIR) in Gujarat. The visit underscores the growing international confidence in India’s potential to become a key player in the global electronics and semiconductor supply chain.
During the tour, Governor Hayashi expressed strong appreciation for Dholera’s world-class infrastructure and its “Plug-and-Play” industrial ecosystem. He specifically noted his confidence in India’s semiconductor growth story, highlighting the rapid progress of the massive Tata Electronics fabrication facility as a cornerstone of this vision.
The Heart of the Visit: India’s First Commercial Semiconductor Fab
The delegation’s focal point was the Tata Electronics Semiconductor Fabrication Facility, a monumental project being developed in partnership with Taiwan’s Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp (PSMC). Key details of the project include:
- Investment: A massive ₹91,000 crore.
- Scale: A 163-acre plant, set to begin production in 2027.
- Output: 50,000 wafers per month, catering to technology nodes from 110 nm to 28 nm.
- Employment: Generation of over 20,000 high-skilled jobs.
Governor Hayashi expressed optimism that this project would not only bolster India’s technological sovereignty but also strengthen India-Japan collaboration and contribute to building resilient global semiconductor value chains.
Why Dholera is Winning Global Attention
The JBIC delegation reviewed the core infrastructure that makes Dholera a compelling destination for advanced manufacturing:
- Integrated Command & Control Centre (ICCC): A digital nerve centre for smart city management.
- Robust Utility Backbone: A dedicated 400 kV substation by Torrent Power ensuring uninterrupted energy.
- Strong Governance: A centralised framework designed for ease of business and fast-tracked project execution.
This visit is part of a growing trend of high-profile Japanese engagement with Dholera. Earlier, the Ambassador of Japan to India had led a 70-member business delegation, signaling strong interest from Japanese industry leaders in semiconductors, electronics, and logistics.
Beyond Factories: Building a Liveable Smart City
Dholera’s vision extends beyond just factories. It is rapidly developing into a holistic smart city with robust social infrastructure to support a skilled workforce. Projects underway include:
- A 200-bed multispeciality hospital.
- An integrated school and multi-cuisine food court.
- Corporate hotels, guest houses, and residential complexes.
This focus on creating a complete ecosystem—from high-tech factories to quality living spaces—is what sets Dholera apart and makes it a preferred hub for next-generation industries. The visit from JBIC, a key international financier, is a powerful testament that India’s ambitious industrial and semiconductor plan is on the right track.
