Cabinet Approves Rs 10,000 Crore Scheme To Boost Container Manufacturing.

The Union Cabinet has approved the ₹10,000 crore Container Manufacturing Promotion Scheme (CMPS), following the Budget announcement by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in February 2026.

The initiative aims to build a globally competitive container manufacturing ecosystem in India, reduce dependence on imports, strengthen supply chains and enhance the competitiveness of Indian exports.

🏭 Key Highlights of the Scheme:

🔹 ₹10,000 crore financial outlay to promote domestic container manufacturing.

🔹 750,000 TEUs annual manufacturing capacity target — approximately 10 times the existing capacity.

🔹 Long-term support until FY 2039–40, covering both greenfield manufacturing facilities and brownfield capacity expansion.

🔹 ₹859 crore for interest subvention to support eligible term loans, with assistance of 3% per annum.

🔹 ₹8,891 crore for operational expenditure assistance to improve the cost competitiveness of Indian-manufactured containers.

🔹 ₹150 crore for testing and certification facilities to strengthen quality standards and manufacturing capabilities.

📈 Investment, Employment & Industrial Growth

The scheme is expected to generate approximately 3,000 direct jobs and more than 50,000 indirect jobs, while creating fresh opportunities for ancillary industries, including specialised steel, corner castings, wooden flooring, paints and other container components.

🌍 Why Does This Matter?

India has traditionally depended heavily on imported shipping containers, with China enjoying significant cost advantages. The new scheme seeks to bridge this cost gap, strengthen domestic manufacturing capabilities and position India as a potential global export hub for quality shipping containers.

Major industry players, including Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone, have reportedly expressed interest in container manufacturing in India. French shipping giant CMA CGM has also placed an order with Indian manufacturer DCM Containers and Engineering.

The Bigger Picture: This initiative could unlock new industrial investment opportunities, encourage domestic value addition, strengthen India’s logistics infrastructure and support the vision of Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat.

🇮🇳 A significant opportunity for India’s manufacturing sector to become a stronger player in global trade.
