Balrampur Chini Mills Lays Foundation for India’s First PLA Biopolymer Plant.

Balrampur Chini Mills (BCML) marked a historic milestone with the foundation stone laying ceremony for India’s first Polylactic Acid (PLA) biopolymer manufacturing facility at Kumbhi, Uttar Pradesh. The event was graced by the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath signifying the state’s commitment to sustainable industrial growth and environmental responsibility.

A Game-Changer for India’s Biopolymer Industry

Strategically located adjacent to BCML’s existing sugar factory in Kumbhi this state-of-the-art plant is designed to enhance resource efficiency and optimize supply chain management. The Rs. 2,850 crore investment leverages cutting-edge technology from global providers, making it a landmark initiative in India’s shift towards sustainable manufacturing.

A First-of-Its-Kind Facility

This industrial-scale biopolymer plant will set a new global benchmark in sustainable production. It is the first facility in India to integrate the entire PLA production process in one location from sugarcane transformation to biopolymer creation. Furthermore, it will be powered entirely by renewable energy, reinforcing BCML’s commitment to a closed-loop sustainability model.

Sustainable Production with Reduced Carbon Footprint

With an annual production capacity of 80,000 tonnes, the plant will produce 100% industrially compostable and bio-based PLA, serving as an eco-friendly alternative to banned Single-Use Plastic (SUP) items. PLA applications include:

  • Straws
  • Disposable cutlery
  • Food trays
  • Bottles
  • Curd cups
  • Carry bags

Additionally, PLA can undergo anaerobic digestion to produce biogas and fertilizer, further minimizing waste and emissions. Compared to conventional plastics, the production process emits 68% less greenhouse gases, with the plant’s renewable energy operations cutting emissions even further.

A Step Towards a Greener Future

This pioneering initiative not only establishes Uttar Pradesh as India’s biopolymer hub but also contributes significantly to the nation’s sustainability goals. By integrating green energy solutions, closed-loop processing, and cutting-edge innovation, BCML is paving the way for a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable future in industrial production.
