Amwoodo to Open Second Manufacturing Plant in South India to Scale Bamboo Product Production.

Kolkata-based Amwoodo, a pioneer in plastic-free bamboo alternatives, has announced plans to establish its second manufacturing facility in southern India, likely in Karnataka. The state-of-the-art plant will have a production capacity of 10 tonnes of bamboo products, adding to the company’s existing 30,000 sq ft facility in West Bengal.

Sustainable Sourcing and Expansion Plans

Founder and Director Agni Mitra shared that Amwoodo will source bamboo from southern and western India, including Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Chhattisgarh, through farmer producer organizations (FPOs). The company currently works with 17 FPOs and 11 Association of Producer Organizations (APOs) in the Northeast, procuring high-quality bamboo from states like Assam, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, and Nagaland.

Amwoodo prioritizes sustainable sourcing, partnering with certified plantations in the Northeast and East India. The strategic placement of processing units minimizes logistics costs and environmental impact while ensuring premium-quality bamboo products.

The Potential of Bamboo as a Sustainable Resource

Founded in 2019 by Agni Mitra, Avijit Rajak, and Sourav Dey, Amwoodo leverages bamboo’s unique characteristics to combat global deforestation and reduce dependency on plastic.

Why Bamboo is Ideal for Sustainability:

  • Rapid Growth: Bamboo grows quickly and regenerates naturally.
  • Non-Destructive Harvesting: Bamboo can be harvested without killing the plant.
  • Carbon Sequestration: Bamboo absorbs more carbon dioxide than many other plants.
  • Soil Health: Bamboo roots improve soil quality and prevent erosion.

“We believe bamboo is the key to solving global deforestation and reducing plastic dependency. It’s carbon-negative and an excellent alternative to traditional timber,” said Mitra.

New Ventures: Direct-to-Consumer Marketplace

Amwoodo recently launched “Ecoconscious,” a direct-to-consumer marketplace offering eco-friendly lifestyle products. The platform integrates seamlessly with the company’s eCommerce brands—Imeco, Dencrus, and Shaveco—aimed at reducing plastic usage in daily life.

This move aligns with Amwoodo’s vision of fostering a sustainable lifestyle while providing consumers with accessible, high-quality bamboo alternatives.

Driving Employment and Regional Development

Amwoodo not only focuses on sustainability but also creates meaningful employment opportunities:

  • Employs over 1,200 individuals.
  • Collaborates with local farmers and artisans in the Northeast and East India.
  • Provides training and fair compensation to artisans, ensuring a steady income while reviving traditional crafts and contributing to regional development.

Impact on Plastic Reduction

By promoting bamboo-based products, Amwoodo helps reduce the reliance on single-use plastics, addressing critical environmental challenges. Bamboo’s carbon-negative properties complement the company’s mission to offset carbon emissions and promote sustainable practices globally.

Amwoodo’s Vision for the Future

With the establishment of its second manufacturing facility and expansion of its eco-conscious product line, Amwoodo is positioning itself as a leader in sustainable solutions. By harnessing the power of bamboo, the company is driving innovation, supporting local economies, and addressing environmental concerns.

“Our mission is to offset carbon emissions while promoting a sustainable lifestyle through bamboo alternatives. This plant in Karnataka is another step toward achieving that vision.” — Agni Mitra, Founder and Director, Amwoodo
