Global specialty chemicals leader Evonik is investing $100 million over the next five years to upgrade its Tippecanoe (Lafayette), Indiana manufacturing facility, reinforcing its long-term commitment to pharmaceutical manufacturing in the United States.
The modernization program will focus on enhancing plant reliability, automation, operational efficiency, and workplace ergonomics, enabling the site to better support the rising demand for U.S.-based drug substance CDMO services.
According to Guido Skudlarek, Head of Evonik’s Health Care business line, expanding the company’s U.S. drug substance capabilities is a strategic priority as global demand continues to accelerate. The Tippecanoe facility will play a key role in strengthening a more resilient and balanced global manufacturing network.
Originally acquired from Eli Lilly and Company in 2010, the Tippecanoe site has evolved into Evonik’s second-largest U.S. manufacturing facility and one of the world’s largest Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API) production sites.
🔹 Key capabilities of the facility include:
✔️ World’s largest dedicated High-Potency API (HPAPI) operation with 170 m³ capacity
✔️ Advanced containment technology with exposure limits down to 0.1 μg/m³
✔️ 860 m³ reactor capacity for conventional API manufacturing
✔️ 2,500 m³ fermentation capacity for large-scale bioprocessing
✔️ A portfolio of 10 advanced pharmaceutical manufacturing technology platforms
This investment represents another step toward next-generation pharmaceutical manufacturing, supporting technology leadership, greater sustainability, and more energy-efficient production processes.
