Global technology leader ABB announced that its production facility in Zibo, Shandong province, China, has transitioned to 100% renewable electricity.
This milestone is part of ABB’s global Mission to Zero™ program, which aims to create a blueprint for low-carbon manufacturing by combining digital energy management, on-site renewables, and electrification.
The Zibo “Green Factory” Blueprint
The Zibo site, which manufactures wiring accessories for ABB’s Smart Buildings portfolio, achieved its energy goals through a combination of on-site generation and strategic procurement:
- Solar Integration: Approximately 15% of the plant’s energy demand is met by rooftop photovoltaic (PV) solar panels installed within the industrial park.
- Green Procurement: The remaining 85% of electricity is sourced through certified green electricity procurement.
- Impact: The shift has reduced annual energy consumption by 71 MWh and avoided more than 63 tons of $CO_2e$ emissions—equivalent to the electricity needed to power several hundred average homes for a month.
Efficiency & Circularity Milestones
Beyond the power source, the facility has integrated AI-driven digital tools and waste reduction strategies:
